  • BS5837

Writtle Forest Consultancy Ltd (WFCL) provides comprehensive arboricultural surveys and expert support to landowners and developers throughout the development process—from securing planning permission to implementing the approved scheme. Services in accordance with BS5837 include:

  1. Initial Tree Survey and Constraints Plan – Trees are assessed and categorised based on their retention value. The Constraints Plan illustrates each tree and their canopy spread and Root Protection Area (RPA).

  2. Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) – A report outlining the potential impacts of the proposed development on trees, along with appropriate mitigation measures such as facilitation pruning, special foundations, or no-dig surfacing.

  3. Arboricultural Method Statement and Tree Protection Plan (AMS & TPP) – A detailed document specifying the protective measures and construction methods required to minimise the impacts on retained trees during development.

  • Tree condition survey & risk assessment

WFCL provides tree condition assessments, ranging from individual specimens to extensive tree stock on large estates. The assessments are tailored to meet the client’s specific needs, such as risk assessments for safety, ongoing tree management, or inventory purposes. WFCL employs a wide range of advanced diagnostic equipment to assess internal decay and structural stability, including Sonic Tomography, Resistance Drilling, and Static Pull Testing, ensuring informed and effective management decisions.

  • Insurance & mortgage assessment

Trees can cause structural damage both indirectly, through subsidence, and directly, by physical contact with buildings. Writtle Forest Consultancy Ltd (WFCL) provides specialist assessments for insurance and mortgage purposes, offering clear, evidence-based recommendations to reduce the risk of future damage. Where damage has already occurred, we deliver separate, proportionate assessments with tailored management options—such as pruning, root barrier installation, or tree removal—to support effective remediation.

  • Tree pests & diseases report

Tree pests and diseases are an increasing concern, with the potential to cause significant harm to individual species and wider tree stocks. Our reports identify infestations and diseases affecting trees, assess their severity and potential impact on tree health and surrounding vegetation, and provide clear, practical recommendations for treatment, ongoing management, or removal to limit further spread.

  • Tree Preservation Order assessment

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is a legal protection issued by a local authority to prevent the cutting down, pruning, or damaging of specific trees or woodlands without permission. WFCL provides assistance in regard to formal procedures involving trees, including reviews of existing TPOs and guidance on TPO and Conservation Area legislation.

  • Tree works monitoring & supervision

WFCL provides on-site monitoring of tree protection measures and supervision of tree-related activities, commonly to discharge planning conditions for both large national developers and individual homeowners.

  • Veteran tree management

Veteran and ancient trees are among the most valuable trees in the UK, often holding exceptional ecological, cultural, or historical significance. WFCL offers guidance on the sensitive management of these trees, promoting their longevity, structural safety, and biodiversity through carefully considered interventions and ongoing monitoring.

  • Tree valuations

A tree valuation is the process of determining the monetary worth of a tree based on factors like species, size, condition, location, and environmental or amenity value. It is often used for insurance claims, compensation, or planning decisions. WFCL uses the Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees (CAVAT) methodology to provide reliable tree valuations.
